History
Joseph Lamb is the third of the great classic ragtime composers alongside Scott Joplin and James Scott, and the only one of the three who never lived in Missouri. A New Jersey musician, largely self-taught, he admired Joplin's music and, with Joplin's encouragement, had his rag "Sensation" published by John Stark. Stark went on to issue more of his work, including "American Beauty Rag" and "Ragtime Nightingale", pieces that show why pianists rank him so highly. His rags are longer-breathed and more elaborate than most of the period, with rich harmony, flowing melodic lines and moments of real tenderness, and "Ragtime Nightingale" in particular has a melancholy, almost romantic colour unusual in the genre. Lamb earned his living outside music and stopped publishing as ragtime faded, so for decades he was barely known. Ragtime researchers rediscovered him in the middle of the century, to their surprise finding him alive, and he returned to composing and playing in his last years. Today his rags are recognised by their lyrical depth and careful craft.
