History
Eubie Blake was a Baltimore pianist and composer whose playing bridged ragtime, stride and Broadway, and whose career stretched across most of the twentieth century. He learned his trade in the ragtime era, playing in clubs and saloons, and pieces like "Charleston Rag" show his style: a busy, syncopated left hand, bright right-hand figures and a sense of showmanship. With lyricist Noble Sissle he wrote Shuffle Along, the 1921 musical that became a Broadway hit written and performed by Black artists and gave the world "I'm Just Wild About Harry". Later songs such as "Memories of You" entered the standard repertoire. After years of lower profile, the ragtime revival of the late 1960s and 1970s brought him back to the stage, and the album The Eighty-Six Years of Eubie Blake introduced his piano and his stories to a new audience. He performed well into old age, loved for his humour and energy, and remained a living link to the music of the century's first decades. His recordings are known for crisp syncopation and the flair of a born entertainer.
