History

Born in Harlem in 1927 and sent as a child to live with relatives in Jamaica, Belafonte came back with an ear for Caribbean phrasing and built a career on it. Calypso (1956) was the first album by a single artist to sell a million copies in the United States, and it did so on songs adapted from Trinidadian and Jamaican folk material: Day-O, Jamaica Farewell, Man Smart. His delivery sits closer to a storyteller than a crooner, with the pauses and the call-and-response left intact from the source. He acted in Carmen Jones (1954) and Island in the Sun (1957) and produced work for stage and television. Away from music he funded and organised for the civil rights movement, worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr., and put together the USA for Africa session that produced We Are the World in 1985. He died in April 2023 at 96.
