History

Fourplay built their sound on relaxed grooves, clean interplay and polished studio craft, a meeting point of jazz fusion, R&B and pop that helped define smooth jazz in the 1990s. The quartet formed in 1991 around four established session and solo players: keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason. Their self-titled debut (1991) set the tone with warm, understated instrumentals and a vocal cover of Marvin Gaye's After the Dance featuring El DeBarge. Between the Sheets (1993) followed the same path, its title track an Isley Brothers cover sung by Chaka Khan with Nathan East. Elixir (1995) kept the formula steady. Ritenour left in 1997 and Larry Carlton took the guitar chair, and later Chuck Loeb held it after him. The band's appeal was restraint: nobody overplays, solos are short and melodic, and the rhythm section stays locked in a soft, elastic pocket. Listeners recognise Fourplay by James's glassy keyboard voicings, East's singing bass and the unhurried, late-night mood.
