History
The Rippingtons were the vehicle of guitarist and bandleader Russ Freeman, who formed the group in 1985 and stayed its only constant member through three decades of changing lineups. Their sound is West Coast smooth jazz at its most polished: bright guitar melodies, glossy keyboards, crisp drums and Latin and Caribbean touches that give the tunes a holiday feel, as titles like Tourist in Paradise suggest. The debut Moonlighting arrived in 1986 with Kenny G among the players, and over the years the band served as a launching pad for musicians who went on to solo careers, among them saxophonists Jeff Kashiwa, Paul Taylor and Eric Marienthal. Records such as Curves Ahead cemented them on contemporary jazz radio, and many of their tracks became familiar through the local forecast segments of The Weather Channel. The band's covers feature its mascot, a grinning jazz cat in sunglasses. Listeners recognise the Rippingtons by Freeman's clean, singing guitar leads and the sunny, travel-poster mood of the arrangements.
