History

Destructo is the DJ and production alias of Gary Richards, known to many as the promoter behind the HARD events, and his records are a Los Angeles take on house that leans on hip-hop and West Coast rap. Richards helped put on early 1990s warehouse raves, worked in A&R for the electronic division of Rick Rubin's Def American Recordings and began playing as DJ Destructo in the mid-1990s, naming Kraftwerk and Daft Punk as inspirations. In 2007 he founded HARD, which grew into a major dance event company. As a producer he released the EPs Technology, Higher, West Coast and RENEGADE. The West Coast EP of 2014 brought in rappers including YG, Problem and Warren G and became an early reference point for g-house, the style that fuses house rhythm with gangsta rap swagger. The idea was simple and it stuck: club tracks built for festival crowds, with verses that belong on a car stereo. The sound is recognised by a bouncing four-to-the-floor beat, fat, simple basslines, rap vocals on top and a laid-back, sunny West Coast attitude.
