History

Behemoth began in Gdansk as a raw black metal band and spent the following decades making the sound heavier, cleaner and more ceremonial without losing the blasphemy at its centre. Through the 2000s the writing moved toward death metal, with drumming that works in blast sections and sudden stops rather than steady speed, guitars tuned for weight, and arrangements that leave room for chant, horns and ritual percussion. Nergal's vocal is a low, articulated growl that keeps the words intelligible, which matters because the lyrics are built from occult and religious language rather than from gore. The Satanist in 2014 pulled all of it together and topped a great many metal year-end lists, and its success owed as much to restraint as to force: space between the riffs, a slow build, an ending allowed to breathe. Live they work in candlelight and vestments, closer to a staged rite than a rock show, and that theatre has made them one of the most divisive bands in Poland.
