History

Wassoulou is a West African popular music named after the Wassoulou cultural area, and its Bambara name is Wasolo. It is mostly women's music: the singers are predominantly women, and the songs return again and again to childbearing, fertility and polygamy. The vocals are passionate and emphatic, delivered in a call-and-response pattern. The sound is built from a specific set of instruments. The soku, a traditional fiddle, is sometimes replaced by imported modern instruments. The djembe drum carries the beat, the karinyan, a metal tube, adds percussion, and two harps fill out the texture: the six-string kamalen n'goni and the four-string bolon. Among the prominent names are Oumou Sangaré, Nahawa Doumbia, Fatoumata Diawara, Coumba Sidibe, Sali Sidibe, Kagbe Sidibe, Dienaba Diakite and Jah Youssouf.
