History
Coimbra fado is the fado of the university city of Coimbra in Portugal. Students of the University of Coimbra took it up, and it is sometimes called student fado, yet it is usually treated as the typical music of the city itself. Its roots are medieval: it developed from trovadorismo, the Iberian lyric style of the Middle Ages, and shares ancestry with the Occitan troubadours. The sound belongs to the Guitarra de Coimbra, a local version of the Portuguese guitar, a modified form of Lisbon's fado guitar reportedly created by Artur Paredes, backed by a classical acoustic guitar and sung by male voices. Artur Paredes and his son Carlos Paredes are counted as the genre's pioneers and masters. It had two golden ages: the 1930s and 1940s of Edmundo Bettencourt and António Menano, and the 1950s and 1960s of José Afonso, Adriano Correia de Oliveira, Luís Goes and João Maria Tudela. The Coimbra Academic Association still runs a fado section that teaches the style to students, and its success led students and locals in Lisbon and Porto to form Coimbra fado groups of their own.
