History
Easycore, also called softcore or popcore, is a branch of pop-punk that bolts hardcore's breakdowns onto pop-punk's fast tempos and upbeat melodies. It is related to skate punk and melodic hardcore but sits much closer to pop-punk than either. The core kit is rhythm guitar, bass and drums with a double bass pedal, sometimes keyboards. Lead vocals are often shared by several members, and clean singing is the norm, though bands such as A Day to Remember, Abandoned By Bears, Till We Drop and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! regularly add growls. One early push came from Blink-182: guitarist Tom DeLonge's interest in post-hardcore marked the band's fourth and fifth albums and the only album of his side project Box Car Racer, and Mark Hoppus was the main producer of the first clear easycore album. The name comes from New Found Glory, who in 2008 organised the Easycore Tour of the United States with Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, A Day to Remember and others, and it is possible that the band founded the style itself. Given pop-punk's commercial run in the 1990s and early 2000s, some critics and listeners hear easycore as pop-punk's new wave.
