Drumfunk

hypnoticwarmraw170–176 BPM

Drumfunk breakbeat from the 2000s: chopped amen, layered breaks, warm sub, hypnotic and warm in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Drumfunk is the corner of drum and bass where the drums themselves are the main event. Drum and bass came out of the UK jungle scene in the early 1990s, built on fast breakbeats, heavy bass and sub-bass and a debt to reggae and dub, and drumfunk is one of its many subgenres. What sets it apart is the stress on intricate, funky, virtuosic drum parts, often cut from live drumming on old funk records. The mood runs deep, esoteric, psychedelic and dark, and drumfunk turns away from the techno-leaning sound typical of modern drum and bass, borrowing from ambient and downtempo instead. Its leading names include Paradox, Alaska, Seba, Fanu, Breakage, Equinox and the duo Fracture & Neptune, and the style lived on specialist labels such as Paradox Music, Esoteric Recordings, Bassbin Records, Inperspective and Scientific Wax. The same handful of artists turns up from roster to roster: Seba and Paradox released together on Bassbin, and Fracture & Neptune appear on six of the scene's thirteen leading labels.
