History
In much of rural Canada, traditional and country-folk music were the main styles until the 1950s, ahead even of jazz and swing. Early Canadian television carried that taste on air, and the most important show of all, Don Messer's Jubilee (1957-1973), bridged rural country-folk and the folk revival rising from urban coffee shops and folk clubs; it launched the careers of country-folk singers Stompin' Tom Connors and Catherine McKinnon. In the United States the same revival began with Woody Guthrie, who sang traditional songs and his own in the 1930s and 1940s, and with his follower Pete Seeger. The sound was acoustic: guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, autoharp, fiddle and accordion, often with guitars in open tunings. Elizabeth Cotten, whose fingerpicking became known as the Cotten style, released her first album in 1958 with Mike Seeger's help. The same year the Kingston Trio's hit "Tom Dooley" is often taken as the start of the revival's commercial era, and in 1963-1964 ABC ran a whole television series, Hootenanny, on this music. The revival then produced Canada's first folk wave with international success, including Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.
