Style recipe for Suno v5
Chutney Soca
Chutney soca from the 1990s: dholak drum, harmonium drone, dhantal metal, euphoric and playful in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Chutney soca blends soca and calypso with chutney, the music of Indo-Trinidadian culture, and it lives in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Suriname. Lyrics come in English, Hindustani or a mix of both, and guitar, piano and drum kit play alongside dholak, harmonium, tabla and dhantal. The groundwork was laid by Lord Shorty, whose first recording, “Long Mango” in 1962, already carried an East Indian flavour; in the early 1970s he brought dholak, tabla and dhantal into calypso and after nearly a decade of experiments arrived at soca itself. The name belongs to Drupatee Ramgoonai, who titled her first album Chutney Soca in 1987, spelled then as Chatnee Soca, and whose 1988 hit “Roll up de Tassa” opened an international market. The formula is often put simply: chutney is a melody and soca is a beat. The style became a national fad in the mid-1990s. Black Stalin won the Calypso Monarch in 1995 with “Sundar Popo”, a song about a veteran Indian singer that got the chutney soca label for its theme alone, and the 1995-96 Carnival season launched the Chutney Soca Monarch Competition, now the biggest Indo-Caribbean concert of its kind, with production costs above US$1 million a year. Chutney rap, chutney jhumar and chutney lambada followed.
