History

Rumba is Cuba's secular genre of dance, percussion and song, born in the late 19th century in the north of the island, mainly in urban Havana and Matanzas, where people of African descent first used the word simply to mean a party. Most ethnomusicologists place its roots in the solares, the large courtyard houses of those two cities, in the 1880s. It draws on Abakuá and yuka traditions and the Spanish-based coros de clave, and comes in three classic forms: yambú, guaguancó and columbia. All styles rest on vocal improvisation, dance and polyrhythmic drumming. Until the early 20th century the drums were cajones, plain wooden boxes, before congas took over: quinto on top, tres dos in the middle, tumba at the bottom. A song often opens with the diana, a melody on meaningless syllables, moves through the canto of partly improvised verses and ends in the call-and-response montuno. Recording began in the 1940s with groups like Los Papines and Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, and AfroCuba de Matanzas, founded in 1957, added batá drums. Abroad the name travelled further than the music: ballroom rhumba in the United States, and Congolese rumba in Africa, which is actually based on son.
