Song lyrics generator: what it does well and where it fails
A song lyrics generator kills the blank page in eight seconds and cannot write your second draft. Four constraints, one brief written twice, and the fixes for rhymes that come out too neat.
Eight seconds, four verses, nothing yours
Type "a song about missing someone" into any song lyrics generator and you get back four verses, a chorus and a bridge before you have finished reading the loading spinner. The lines will rhyme. The chorus will almost certainly contain the words "hold on" or "tonight". Nothing in it is wrong, and nothing in it is yours.
That is the honest trade, and it is worth saying out loud before anyone sells you a plan. A lyrics generator is superb at killing the blank page and useless at the second draft. It has no stake in your song, so it has no opinion about which of your two chorus lines is better. You do. Every good workflow I have seen splits along exactly that line: the machine produces raw material fast, the human decides what survives.
So the question is not which of these tools is best. It is what you hand it, and what you refuse to hand over.
Three families, three different ways of failing
Dedicated lyric generators. One text box, a genre dropdown, a mood dropdown, a Generate button. Free or near-free, instant, and afflicted by a house accent. Run twenty generations on one of these and you start seeing the same rhyme families come back: fire and desire, night and light, apart and heart. They are trained or templated toward the safest possible pop centre because that is what gets the fewest complaints.
General chat models. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Best raw sentences of the three families by a distance, and the worst defaults. Ask for a song and you get a poem. Lines run fourteen syllables long, images need a second reading to land, and there are no section tags unless you ask twice. Then half the reply is the model explaining the song it just wrote back to you. Everything wrong with a chat model here is fixable by prompt. Nothing wrong with a dedicated generator is.
Generators built into a music tool. Suno's own lyrics helper is the obvious example. It writes fast and it writes safe, because its job is to hand the audio model something singable, not to hand you something worth singing twice. That is a defensible engineering goal and a poor songwriting partner. Here is the position I will defend for the rest of this article: the one-big-box generators lose, and they lose for a reason that has nothing to do with model quality. A single free-text field lets you be vague, and vagueness is what produces the generic output people then blame on the AI.
What a usable output looks like
Before you judge any generator, decide what you are grading. Four things, and they are checkable in under a minute.
Section tags in the text. [Verse], [Chorus], [Bridge], sitting on their own lines. Not "Verse 1:" in plain prose. Suno reads the bracketed form and treats everything outside brackets as words to sing, which is why a stray "(guitar solo here)" ends up sung by a confused voice.
Line lengths you can actually sing. Count syllables on three random lines. Six to ten is comfortable in most pop and rock. Thirteen means the singer swallows the ending or the melody turns into recitative. A generator that averages twelve is writing poetry and calling it a lyric.
A hook that repeats verbatim. If the chorus appears three times with three different wordings, it is not a chorus, it is three verses in a trench coat. Repetition is not laziness in songwriting, it is the mechanism. A chorus that lands usually repeats one line four times in ninety seconds and nobody notices.
Verses that carry different information. Verse two should move the story or turn the camera. If verse two restates verse one in synonyms, the generator ran out of subject, which almost always means you gave it a theme instead of a subject.
The four constraints that change the output
Every generic lyric I have seen came from a brief missing at least one of these. Add all four and the same model, on the same day, produces something you can use.
1. A concrete subject, not a theme. "Heartbreak" is a theme. "The last time I drove past her building I did not slow down" is a subject. The first gives the model a genre average to reproduce. The second gives it a car, a street, a decision and a person, and it will build the rest of the song out of that furniture. This is the single highest-leverage change on the list, and it costs you one sentence of thinking.
2. A named point of view. First person confesses. Second person accuses. Third person watches from across the room. Collective ("we") turns the chorus into something a crowd can shout, which is why so many stadium songs live there. Unnamed point of view means the generator drifts between all four inside one song, and the result feels slippery without the listener knowing why.
3. A structure, chosen up front. Classic verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus is the default for a reason, but it is not always right. A story song with no repeating chorus needs through-composed. A dance track wants a hook-driven loop with minimal verse. Ask for "a song" and you get classic every time, whether or not it fits.
4. A hook direction. Should the hook be the title line, a question, a contrast, a confession, or a chant? Five directions, wildly different songs. "Where were you in September" is a question hook. "I was fine, I was fine, I was fine" is a chant. Leave this unstated and generators default to title-line, which is the safest and the flattest.
That is also the argument for how we built our own tool. Three hundred characters forces a subject and refuses a theme, and the eight dropdowns are the four constraints above plus the three things Suno needs to sing it. A big empty box would be friendlier and would produce worse songs.

The vague version. Theme: "a sad song about love". Everything else left on default.

Rhymes are clean. Syllable counts are fine. It is unusable, because nothing in it could only be about your song. "Shining bright", "empty space", "holding on" are the genre average, and the model gave you the average because that is what "sad song about love" asks for.
The constrained version. Theme: "She left the plants. Three months later I am still watering them and I do not know why." Point of view: first person. Structure: no-bridge. Hook direction: contrast. Audience: 25-44. Style: Indie. Tone: longing, defiance.

Same model, same eight seconds. What changed is that the plants are doing the work. The contrast hook direction produced the split between "still alive" and "for no one" rather than a title line. The no-bridge structure kept it at two verses and stopped the model from inventing a third act it had no material for. First person plus defiance is why the line is "it forgave me" and not "I miss you".
Notice what the generator did not do: it did not decide that the plants were the subject. You did. It found the fern, the two feet, and the week, which is genuinely more than most people produce staring at a notebook at eleven at night. That division of labour is the whole point. When the output goes wrong
Everything rhymes too neatly. The generator is reaching for the nearest rhyme, which is always the most used one. Two fixes. Ask for near rhyme or assonance instead of perfect rhyme, and change your subject words: a lyric about "fire" will pull "desire" out of any model on earth. If the rhyme is still driving the meaning rather than following it, the subject is too abstract to generate real images.
Verse two repeats verse one. Almost always a subject problem, not a model problem. One situation gives one verse of material. Give the brief a before and an after, or a second location, and verse two has somewhere to stand. In the plants example, verse two can be the day she came back for the coffee machine.
Lines are too long to sing. Read them aloud at the tempo you plan to use. If you run out of breath, they are long. Ask for a specific syllable count per line and give an example line of the right length. Models match example lengths far more reliably than they follow a number.
The chorus does not land. Usually the chorus is doing narration instead of one repeated claim. A chorus is a statement, not a scene. Strip it to the single sentence you would want a stranger to remember, repeat that sentence, and move the details you just deleted into the verse where they belong.
The output arrives as one wall of text. Ask again, explicitly demanding bracketed section tags. If a tool cannot produce them at all, that is your signal to switch tools rather than to hand-format every generation. The whole point of a prompt and lyrics toolkit is that formatting is not your job.
FAQ
Are free song lyrics generators good enough? For breaking a blank page, yes. Most free tools produce the same quality of first draft as the paid ones, because the hard part is your brief, not their model. Where free tools fall down is consistency: no way to save what worked, no structure control, and output you have to re-tag by hand every time.
Can I use generated lyrics commercially? The words themselves are usually the easy part; the complications sit with the recording and the platform you release on. Rules differ by tool and by country, so read the terms of the specific generator you used rather than trusting a general answer, including ours.
Will Suno sing anything I paste in? It sings everything that is not inside square brackets, which is the rule people learn the hard way when "(soft piano intro)" comes back as a lyric. Structural instructions go in brackets, sung words do not.
Should I write the lyric first or the style prompt first? Lyric first, if the song has anything to say. The style prompt is easier to fit to finished words than the reverse, and a lyric written to fit a style tends to come out as filler in the shape of a genre.
How many generations before I get something usable? Three to five if your brief carries the four constraints. Fifteen or more if it does not, and the fifteenth will be no better than the second. When you notice yourself regenerating instead of rewriting the brief, stop and rewrite the brief.
