History
The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band formed in Tacoma, Washington, in 1958 by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, who met over a used-car sale and bonded over a shared love of guitar. Recruiting bassist-turned-lead-guitarist Nokie Edwards and, later, drummer Mel Taylor, they built the classic lineup that defined their surf-and-twang instrumental sound. Their 1960 single "Walk, Don't Run" became an international hit and is still cited as one of the most influential guitar recordings ever made; it was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Through the 1960s, 38 of the band's albums charted in the US, and they pioneered concept albums and popularized fuzz, flanging, and twelve-string guitar effects in rock. With over 100 million records sold, The Ventures are the best-selling instrumental band in history, earning the nickname "The Band That Launched a Thousand Bands." Though their US popularity faded in the 1970s, they remain hugely popular in Japan, touring there for decades. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
