History

Joy were an Austrian trio working in the middle of the 1980s in the space between Italo disco and European synth pop: bright major-key melodies, a programmed bassline that walks rather than pulses, and vocals sung in accented English over layers of cheap, warm synthesiser. "Touch by Touch" is the song everything else gets measured against, built on a chorus that repeats almost immediately and a hook simple enough to survive any radio transfer. The other singles work the same way, "Valerie" slower and sweeter, "Japanese Girls" leaning on a near-novelty melody. The group's commercial peak in the German-speaking market was brief, but the records found a second and much longer life in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, where they became fixtures of retro radio and are still played at a volume no chart position from the period would predict. What a listener recognises is the production: thin drum machine, glassy synthetic brass and a chorus that arrives too early on purpose.
