History

Billy Strings plays bluegrass with the stamina of a jam band and the attack of a heavy guitarist. Born William Apostol and raised in Michigan, he learned traditional flatpicking from family members and spent his teenage years around both old-time picking and harder, louder music, a mix that still shows in his playing. His guitar work is built on dazzling speed and clean tone, but on stage the songs stretch into long improvisations that drift toward psychedelia before snapping back to a hard bluegrass groove. The album Home won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album, and Renewal and Highway Prayers widened the palette with darker songwriting, unusual textures and a band that follows him into open-ended passages. He became one of the few bluegrass players of his generation to fill large venues and draw audiences from outside the genre, many of them jam band fans. Fans know him by rapid, crisp flatpicked runs, a gravelly and emotional voice and live sets where a single tune can turn into a twenty-minute journey.
