Genres and styles in Suno: how to name the sound you actually want

There is no list of supported genres, only descriptions the model reads. How genre, production style and mood differ, why a subgenre beats a broad label, and where 1,960 catalogued styles sit.


There is no list of genres Suno supports. The model is not picking from a dropdown, it is reading a description, and that difference is the whole game: the genre is not the label, it is the set of features you named.

Which leads somewhere practical. rock gives you average rock. operatic arena rock, 1970s, layered electric guitar orchestration, grand piano, stacked vocal harmonies, 106 BPM gives you a specific record. Both are about rock, and the results are not comparable.

Genre, production style and mood are three different things

They get blended constantly, and that is why prompts come out mushy.

Genre answers what kind of music this is structurally: rhythm, harmony, instrumentation. thrash metal, nu-disco, bossa nova.

Production style answers how it was recorded and mixed: gated reverb drums, vinyl sample crackle, dry aggressive mix, wide dimensional stereo. Era belongs here and is the cheapest control available: 1980s sets an entire decade of timbre in one token.

Mood answers what it should make someone feel: menacing, euphoric, wistful. Useful, but as seasoning. Three moods maximum, after which they start contradicting each other.

A prompt made entirely of moods is the single most common mistake. beautiful, emotional, powerful describes no sound at all, so the model averages.

How specific should the genre be

More specific than feels right.

Broad labels like rock, pop and electronic leave the model an enormous space, so it walks to the centre of it, toward the most probable sound. A subgenre narrows that space immediately. synthwave beats electronic. filtered French house beats house.

The second refinement attaches to the genre itself rather than sitting in the mood list: not arena rock plus theatrical, but operatic arena rock. A word fused to the genre name carries more weight than the same word parked at the end of the string.

What the distribution actually looks like

The numbers are not the point in themselves. They show that "electronic" contains over four hundred distinguishable sounds, so writing the single word electronic in a prompt throws four hundred and thirty-six of them away at random.

Every style in the catalogue is written as a finished string in the format the model reads best. The first ten are open without a subscription so you can judge the format first. Browsing is easier in the catalogue, which filters by family, era and tempo.

Write genre names in English

This is functional rather than stylistic. The model was trained overwhelmingly on English descriptions of music, so a genre name in another language arrives as an approximate hint while the English term arrives as a precise one.

The split stays simple: anything the model executes as an instruction goes in English, anything it sings goes in the song's language. More in Suno in Russian, which generalises to any language.

Blending genres works, but not for free

Fusing two styles is a legitimate technique and one of the few reliable ways to get a sound your neighbour does not have. Two rules.

Blend things that differ in instrumentation, not in production. Jazz harmony with trap drums is a coherent brief. lo-fi bedroom recording together with polished professional master is a contradiction, and the model hedges into something average and characterless.

Say which one leads. A fusion needs a base and an additive, otherwise you get a smear. Bossa nova with trap drums and trap with bossa nova guitar are two different songs.

Tempo is part of the genre

170 BPM in thrash and 117 in dance-pop are not decorations, they are conditions of the genre. Borrow a tempo from somewhere else and the recipe collapses: the drums play the wrong pattern and the vocal misses the character.

So tempo goes in as a figure at the end of the string, after genre, era, instruments and vocal have been named. The model reads the string as a list of requirements, and position carries weight.

A fast way to find your genre

If you do not know what the thing in your head is called, work from features rather than from a label.

  1. Name two or three instruments that must be audible.
  2. Name the decade it resembles.
  3. Name the vocal type, or say there is none.
  4. Find a catalogue style where those features already sit together and see what it is called.

Usually step three reveals that what you wanted has a name you would never have guessed. Nu-disco instead of "upbeat dance thing with retro synths". From there you are working with a precise term and the result stops being a lottery.
