History
Chamber jazz is jazz for small, acoustic ensembles in which the interplay of the group matters. Its aesthetic comes from the chamber music of neoclassicism, which puts composers such as Igor Stravinsky in its family tree, and it borrows from classical forms, non-Western music and folk traditions from Celtic to Central European and Latin American. The American bassist John Kirby, who led a sextet in the 1930s and 1940s, is arguably the first chamber jazz musician, and Chico Hamilton was another early proponent, although many other early exponents came from Europe. From the late 1960s the German label ECM did much to popularize the sound, and several chamber jazz albums came out on Windham Hill Records. Its non-Western side sometimes gets it filed as world music, and its blend of neoclassicism and jazz as new age. The instruments give it away: oboe, mandolin, cymbalum or tabla, none of them usual in jazz. Ahmad Jamal's Chamber Music of the New Jazz stands as a representative piece. Meg Okura has been dubbed the Queen of Chamber Jazz, and the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jimmy Giuffre, Dave Douglas and Brad Mehldau are all linked to the style.
