History

Zucchero brought blues and soul phrasing into Italian pop without translating the feel into something politer. The voice is hoarse, low and heavily worn, and the arrangements around it reach for Hammond organ, gospel backing vocals and slide guitar where Italian radio expected strings. He came out of Emilia and played the local circuit for years before anything landed, and the breakthrough arrived once he stopped writing in the festival mould and started writing around the rhythm section. Senza una donna is the song that crossed borders, later recut as an English-language duet, and Baila kept him on European radio a decade on. He has worked repeatedly with musicians from outside Italy, including a well-known duet with Luciano Pavarotti, and that mixture of a rock band, a gravel voice and an Italian lyric is what listeners recognise. His concerts lean on the band rather than on production, and the older songs are played hard rather than nostalgically.
