History
Zola Jesus is the project of Nika Roza Danilova, who pairs an operatic, classically trained voice with cold synths, industrial percussion and gothic atmosphere. She grew up in rural Wisconsin in a family with Russian roots and studied opera as a child before turning to lo-fi, noisy home recordings in the late 2000s. Conatus (2011), on Sacred Bones, brought the voice forward over clearer electronic arrangements and became her best known early record. She later reworked her songs with the composer JG Thirlwell and a string quartet for Versions. Taiga (2014), released by Mute, pushed toward a bigger pop scale, while Okovi (2017), whose title means shackles in Slavic languages, returned to darker and more personal material written around loss and illness among people close to her. Arkhon followed in 2022. Listeners recognise Zola Jesus by that huge, resonant voice filling a cold electronic space, with pounding drums and a sense of grief running underneath the melodies.
