History
Zac Brown Band came out of the Georgia bar circuit playing country with the instincts of a jam band: fiddle and acoustic guitar up front, but also long solos, tight three-part harmony and a rhythm section happy to drop into reggae or swing when a song asks for it. Chicken Fried made the approach commercial, a small-pleasures lyric on a melody simple enough to sing back on first hearing, and the Best New Artist Grammy followed in 2010. Breadth is the band's own claim. A set can move from a Caribbean-flavoured singalong to a slow, minor-key story song like Colder Weather without changing personnel, and the studio work has pulled in rock and bluegrass players rather than the usual Nashville session roster. The recognisable elements are Brown's plain, unhurried baritone and the harmony stacked behind it, warmer and fuller than most country radio of the period allowed. Live, the songs run longer than the recordings and the playing is the point.
