History

Yungblud makes loud, unsubtle guitar pop out of Doncaster and keeps the accent: the vowels stay Yorkshire and the phrasing is closer to shouting a chorus across a room than to singing it. The tempos and chord shapes come from early-2000s pop punk, but they sit next to hip hop drum programming, glam theatrics and the occasional piano ballad, which is why the albums rarely hold one style for long. Loner and Fleabag work on a shared principle: a fast half-spoken verse, a chorus with the whole band behind it, and a lyric aimed at people who do not fit, written without irony. The music resolves on stage, and the festival headline slots suit the material better than headphones do. The self-titled album went to number one at home. Whatever the arrangement is doing, the recognisable element is the voice, nasal, urgent and deliberately unpolished, with the cracks left in rather than tuned out. The songs are short on nuance by choice, and the bluntness is the design rather than a shortfall in it.
