History

Youngn Lipz brought a melodic, emotional edge to the Western Sydney drill and rap wave. He comes from Cabramatta, has Samoan roots and broke through in 2019, the same year a remix of A Boogie wit da Hoodie's Mood Swings featuring him began circulating widely. His debut single Misunderstood, released later in 2019, set the template: a drill-leaning beat with sliding bass and tight hi-hats, but carried by sung, heartfelt hooks about loyalty, struggle and being judged, closer to R&B in feeling than to the colder side of the genre. The song went double platinum in Australia and later won an APRA award as the most performed hip hop work. His debut album Area Baby arrived in 2021, reached the Australian top ten and was nominated for an ARIA award for best hip hop release. Later singles leaned toward club and electronic production, and he has worked with other Western Sydney artists, including Hooligan Hefs. A listener recognises Youngn Lipz by the warm, melodic vocal lines riding over drill drums, the local accent and the mix of street storytelling with open vulnerability.
