History
Yazoo (billed as Yaz in the United States for trademark reasons) were an English synth-pop duo formed in Basildon, Essex, in 1981. The pairing brought together Vince Clarke, fresh off writing Depeche Mode's early hits, with Alison Moyet, a local singer rooted in blues and R&B rather than electronic music. That contrast, icy synthesizers against a raw, soulful voice, became the group's signature. They released two albums, "Upstairs at Eric's" (1982) and "You and Me Both" (1983), yielding singles such as "Only You," "Don't Go," "Situation," and "Nobody's Diary" before splitting in 1983, reportedly over creative differences. Clarke went on to found Erasure with Andy Bell, while Moyet built a long solo career. "Situation" later found a second life on the American club and early house-music scene through its extended remixes. The duo reunited for a one-off tour in 2008.
