History
Yaw Tog is the Kumasi rapper whose single Sore turned Asakaa drill from a local scene into something the wider world noticed. He grew up in Santasi and was discovered by video director Koo Poku while still in secondary school. The song took off in 2020 with verses from fellow Kumasi drill rappers including O'Kenneth and Jay Bahd. The track's slow, menacing beat and Twi chorus spread quickly across Ghana, and a remix with Kwesi Arthur and Stormzy took it to British audiences as well. Sore won Best Hip Hop Song of the Year at both the 3Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards in 2021. His EP Time and the project Young and Matured followed, and he has worked with artists such as Stonebwoy. His delivery is younger and more urgent than many of his crew-mates: a quick, slightly nasal flow that rides the drill bounce closely, with hooks built for chanting. A listener would recognise him by that energy, the Twi slang and the Kumasi drill sound of sliding bass, eerie keys and stuttering hi-hats.
