History

Yalla is a folk-rock band formed in 1970 from a student ensemble at the Tashkent Theatrical Art Institute in Uzbekistan, then part of the USSR. Vocalist Farrukh Zakirov joined in 1972 and became artistic director in 1976, shaping the band's signature blend of electric guitars and keyboards with traditional Uzbek instruments like the rubab and doira. Yalla's biggest hit, "Uchkuduk, tri kolodtsa" ("Uchkuduk, Three Wells," 1981, music by Zakirov, lyrics by Yuri Entin), became one of the most popular songs in the Soviet Union during the 1980s. The group toured widely across Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America and appeared at the "Voice of Asia" festival. One notable trivia highlight: at the 1973 World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin, Yalla recorded fifteen songs in German for the East German Amiga label, with several reportedly reaching the national hit parade. Still active today, the band marked its 50th anniversary in 2023 and performed at the opening of Tashkent's Humo Arena in 2019.
