History
Wynonie Harris sang jump blues with swagger, humour and very little restraint, and his records were some of the loudest and most suggestive of the late 1940s. Raised in Omaha, Nebraska, he made his name as a vocalist with Lucky Millinder's big band before going solo and settling at King Records in Cincinnati. There he cut a long string of rhythm and blues hits, headed by his 1948 version of Roy Brown's "Good Rockin' Tonight", which topped the R&B chart and outsold the original. "All She Wants to Do Is Rock" followed in 1949, one of many songs built on double meanings about drinking, dancing and sex. His nickname was Mr. Blues, and his stage act was flamboyant and cocky, with a strutting confidence that younger rock and roll singers would soon borrow. Musically he worked in the classic jump blues frame: honking tenor saxophone, riffing horns, boogie piano and a heavy backbeat. Listeners recognise him by the booming, grinning voice, the shouted asides and the sense of a party getting slightly out of hand.
