History

Windy & Carl make slow, luminous guitar drones that sound like the afterglow of a rock band, all sustained chords, washes of delay and a voice that drifts in and out of focus. The duo of Windy Weber and Carl Hultgren came out of Dearborn, Michigan, in the 1990s, part of the American underground that took the textures of space rock and shoegaze and slowed them almost to a standstill. Their records turned that approach into something close to ambient music: long pieces with no drums, where layered guitars and bass hover in a soft haze and Windy's sparse vocals feel like another instrument. Antarctica (1997) and Depths (1998) captured that sound at its most spacious and are often cited as touchstones of 1990s drone pop. They also ran a record shop in their hometown, which made them a small hub for the local experimental scene. Much later, We Will Always Be (2012) returned to the same patient style with a more personal, reflective tone. A listener recognises them by warm, blurred guitar sustain, the absence of rhythm and a gentle melancholy that never turns dark.
