History

Wicca Phase Springs Eternal is the solo project of Adam McIlwee, who turned from emo guitars toward a dark, gothic blend of trap beats, synths and low, crooned vocals. McIlwee was a founding member of the Scranton, Pennsylvania band Tigers Jaw and left the group in the early 2010s to focus on this project. He became a central figure in GothBoiClique, the collective that also included Lil Peep and Lil Tracy, and his music helped shape the moody emo rap that came out of that circle. Where many peers were fast and loud, Wicca Phase works in slow tempos, reverb and gloom, drawing on goth rock, emo and occult imagery about witches, ghosts and lost love. Corinthiax, released on Run for Cover in 2018, was his first full-length album and gathered these ideas into a coherent, cold, nocturnal record. Later releases kept to the same direction. The deep, sighing vocals, the misty synth and guitar textures and the romantic, haunted mood make the project easy to recognise.
