History

Wet Leg built their sound on deadpan delivery set against guitars that snap rather than soar. The band came out of the Isle of Wight and arrived in 2021 with Chaise Longue, a song carried by flat, almost bored spoken phrasing over a two-note bassline and a chorus that never quite lets go of its own joke. The contrast is the whole trick: the playing is tight post-punk with a surf edge and a rhythm section that leaves plenty of air, while the vocal sits on top refusing to raise its voice. The 2022 debut album turned that into a full record, moving between dry humour and songs that are genuinely bruised underneath, Wet Dream among them, and it collected a Mercury Prize nomination and Grammy recognition. Later material such as catch these fists pushes louder and heavier, trading some of the wryness for weight. What a listener recognises stays constant: close conversational vocals, clean guitar tone, sudden loud choruses, and lines that land the punchline without the singer changing tone.
