History
Warren G (born Warren Griffin III, November 10, 1970, in Long Beach, California) is a rapper, record producer and DJ regarded as a pioneer of G-funk, the melodic, synth-heavy strain of West Coast hip hop that defined 1990s rap. Around 1990 he formed the trio 213 with childhood friends Nate Dogg and Snoop Dogg, named after Long Beach's area code; the group later split when Warren G connected Snoop Dogg to his step-brother, producer Dr. Dre, indirectly launching Snoop's career and Dre's own solo run with The Chronic. Warren G's own breakthrough came with the 1994 duet with Nate Dogg, "Regulate," which reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped his debut album, Regulate... G Funk Era, go triple platinum and debut at number 2 on the Billboard 200. Both "Regulate" and its follow-up single earned Grammy nominations in 1995. He released five more solo albums through 2009, plus a belated 213 reunion album, The Hard Way, in 2004. Nate Dogg, his 213 groupmate, died in 2011; Warren G later issued a 2015 EP built around Nate's archived vocals.
