History

W.A.S.P. played the darkest, most theatrical corner of 1980s Los Angeles metal: blunt, anthemic hard rock wrapped in a shock-rock stage show of blood, fire and raw meat. The band was built around singer, bassist and later guitarist Blackie Lawless, whose snarling voice and songwriting defined it from the start, with Chris Holmes as the wild lead guitarist of the early years. Their first single, Animal (F**k Like a Beast), was notorious enough to land on the Parents Music Resource Center's list of objectionable songs, and the band became a symbol of everything the censorship campaign opposed. Underneath the controversy were strong, simple anthems: I Wanna Be Somebody, L.O.V.E. Machine, Wild Child and Blind in Texas. By the early 1990s Lawless turned toward more ambitious writing, and The Crimson Idol, a concept album about a doomed young rock star named Jonathan Steel, is often named as the band's creative peak. At its core, W.A.S.P. is Lawless's raw, howling vocals, fist-pumping gang choruses and heavy, direct guitars.
