History
An actor first: Vladimir Vysotsky (1938-1980) joined the Taganka Theatre in 1964 and played Hamlet there, and most Soviet viewers also knew his face from film, including Zheglov in «Место встречи изменить нельзя» (1979). For what the songs made of him, the official system of genres had no slot at all. He wrote several hundred of them and performed to his own seven-string guitar, in a forced, hoarse baritone that pushed the consonants hard and clipped the ends of lines. «Охота на волков» and «Банька по-белому» (both 1968) and «Кони привередливые» (1972) mark out the span: allegory, camp narrative, a headlong ride to the edge. Almost none of it came out officially in his lifetime. It travelled on reel-to-reel copies of copies, the magnitizdat circuit, hiss accumulating at every generation. His wife was the French actress Marina Vlady, which gave him rare access abroad and a few foreign releases. He died in Moscow in July 1980, during the Olympic Games, and the crowd at his funeral became an event in its own right.
