History

Born into a family of working musicians, Vladimir Presnyakov Jr. was singing on records as a teenager; his father played saxophone in Samotsvety. The songs he recorded for the 1986 children's film «Выше радуги», «Зурбаган» among them, came before most listeners knew the name. «Стюардесса по имени Жанна» (1990) fixed the signature: a light, high male falsetto over synth-funk, slap bass and drum-machine patterns, sung with an almost weightless attack and a lot of ornament in the upper register. While most male estrada leaned on chest voice and declamation, he went the other way, thin and agile, closer to Anglo-American funk-pop of the 1980s than to the Soviet variety stage. He has worked steadily since, moving between pop, rock arrangements and film songs, and the falsetto is still what identifies him inside a phrase.
