History
Vlad Stashevsky is the sound of Russian radio pop in the middle of the 1990s: a light, slightly plaintive tenor over synth arrangements, a soft drum machine underneath, and a chorus that arrives early. The material came out of the Matvienko production circle, which at that point was turning out melodic, easily sung songs designed to be recognisable after one hearing, and Stashevsky was the face placed in front of them. Pozovi menya v nochi is the template, a slow romantic lament with its hook sitting in the most comfortable part of the voice. Lyubov zdes bolshe ne zhivyot works the same way, sadness delivered at a tempo that still moves. He appeared year after year at Pesnya goda, was constantly on television, and sold on cassettes from street kiosks, which is how pop actually reached people then. The songs now carry a very specific nostalgia, tied to the exact texture of mid-90s Russian broadcasting.
