History
Before New York, Villi Tokarev (1934-2019) played double bass in Soviet orchestras. He emigrated in the mid-1970s, spent his first American years on ordinary jobs including driving a cab, and began recording in Brooklyn. The albums he made around Brighton Beach in the late 1970s and the 1980s, «Небоскрёбы» the best known of them, described emigrant life with a wink: skyscrapers, dollars, homesickness worn lightly. He sang in a nasal, conversational tenor over a small bar band of guitar, bass, drums and a synthesiser standing in for an accordion. None of it was released in the USSR. The songs travelled there on copied cassettes instead, and by the end of the 1980s they were familiar enough that his first concerts at home filled halls. He recorded and toured almost to the end of his life and died in Moscow in 2019.
