History

Vicente Fernández sang ranchera the way it was meant to be sung, standing still in a charro suit with a full mariachi behind him and no microphone technique to speak of, just a tenor pushed to the top of its range and held there. He came from rural Jalisco and spent his life inside the tradition rather than modernising it: trumpets in thirds, violins answering the vocal line, guitarrón walking underneath, songs about drink, pride, betrayal and return. Volver, Volver is the one a whole room finishes, a man admitting he is going back to someone he should not. El Rey states the opposite position, a broke man insisting he is still king, and the pause before the last line is the entire performance. Acá Entre Nos keeps the same delivery at a whisper. He also made a long run of films that carried the songs further than records alone could. What a listener recognises is the held note at the end of a phrase, unhurried and unashamedly loud.
