History
VIA Gra was a Ukrainian girl group formed in Kyiv in 2000 by manager Dmitriy Kostyuk and songwriter-producer Konstantin Meladze. The name is a triple wordplay: "VIA" stands for vocal-instrumental ensemble in Ukrainian, "gra" means "game" or "play", and together it echoes the drug Viagra. That echo caused real trouble: after the group's English-language album charted in Japan, the drug's manufacturer threatened legal action, so outside the former Soviet states the band performed as Nu Virgos. Musically they worked in dance-pop, europop and eurodance, built around a rotating trio of soloists, with 13 different singers passing through over 25 years, including Vera Brezhneva, Anna Sedokova, Albina Dzhanabaeva and Svitlana Loboda. Their debut single "Popytka No. 5" (2000) made them stars across the CIS, and 2005's "Brillianty" ("Diamonds") became their signature hit; the group won Russia's MUZ-TV "Best Group" award four times. In August 2003, Russian MTV reportedly aired their videos every 35 minutes, a record for the channel at the time. VIA Gra disbanded in 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and its dissolution was made permanent in 2025.
