History

«Малиновка» came out of Minsk in 1980 and turned Verasy into one of the most played ensembles of the decade's first half. The Belarusian group had formed in the 1970s and worked under composer and keyboard player Vasily Raynchik, who wrote much of the repertoire and set the sound: electric piano, horns, a rhythm section with a funk lean, and vocal writing that puts a bright female lead in front of close backing harmony. Yadviga Poplavskaya sang most of those leads; Alexander Tikhanovich, her husband and stage partner, took the male half of the duets, «Я у бабушки живу» among them. What separates Verasy from the standard VIA template is how much dance-band swing and studio gloss the arrangements carry, with Belarusian folk material handled as pop rather than as ethnography. The couple later left to work as a duo, and the early-1980s records remain the reference version of the group.
