History

Vera Brezhneva (born Vira Halushka, 3 February 1982, in Dniprodzerzhynsk, Ukrainian SSR) is a Ukrainian singer, actress, and television presenter. She rose to fame in 2002 as a member of the girl group Nu Virgos (known in Russian-speaking markets as VIA Gra), joining its celebrated "golden lineup" alongside Nadia Meiher and Anna Sedokova. The group's producer gave her the stage name "Brezhneva" as a nod to Leonid Brezhnev, who was born in the same city. With Nu Virgos she recorded several hit albums and won multiple Golden Gramophone Awards before leaving in 2007 to go solo. Her solo career, based mainly in Russia through the 2010s, produced the album "Lyubov spasyot mir" (2010) and singles like "Nirvana" and "Khoroshiy den'," alongside acting roles in the "Love in the Big City" and "Yolki" film franchises. In 2014 she was named a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for UNAIDS. Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, she left Russia, dropped the "Brezhneva" name in favor of the mononym "Vira," and began recording in Ukrainian.
