History

Vaya Con Dios came out of Brussels with a sound assembled from borrowed traditions: Latin percussion, gypsy jazz guitar, French chanson phrasing and a rhythm section that stays acoustic and quiet. Dani Klein sings it all in a low, smoky contralto placed far forward in the mix, and the arrangements are built to leave space around her rather than to fill it. Nah Neh Nah is the one that travelled, a shuffling brushed groove, a wordless hook and a horn line, and it stayed in European radio rotation long after its chart run, including on Russian stations. What's a Woman slows everything to a ballad and is carried almost entirely by the voice. Puerto Rico leans on the Latin side of the palette. The band sang mostly in English while sounding nothing like English or American pop of the period, which is part of why the records aged well. What a listener recognises is that contralto over acoustic guitar with almost nothing else in the way.
