History

Vashti Bunyan's music is small and quiet on purpose: a soft, breathy voice, fingerpicked guitar and gentle arrangements of recorder, strings and piano that sound like songs sung to oneself. She started in London in the mid-1960s, when Andrew Loog Oldham signed her as a pop singer and gave her the Jagger and Richards song Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind as her first single. Pop success never came, and she left the city to travel north by horse and cart towards the Hebrides, writing songs along the way. Those songs became Just Another Diamond Day, produced by Joe Boyd and released in 1970 with contributions from members of the Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention. The album sold very few copies and she gave up music for three decades. By 2000 it had become a cult record, and its reissue made her a reference point for Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom and other freak-folk musicians. She returned with Lookaftering in 2005 and Heartleap in 2014. The fragile vocal, rural imagery and hushed domestic intimacy are what define her.
