History
Varathron play dark, mid-paced black metal steeped in occultism and old horror, with a murky, ritual atmosphere rather than raw speed. The band was formed in the late 1980s in Ioannina, in north-western Greece, by vocalist Stefan Necroabyssious, who has remained its one constant figure through many line-up changes. Together with Rotting Christ and Necromantia they defined the first wave of Hellenic black metal, and with Necromantia they also shared an early split. His Majesty at the Swamp (1993) is regarded as one of that scene's classic debuts: melodic, heavy, with keyboards and a sense of slow menace. Walpurgisnacht (1995) continued in the same vein. After a long quieter stretch, the band returned with Untrodden Corridors of Hades (2014), which showed the old approach intact with fuller production. A listener recognises them by Necroabyssious's harsh, declamatory voice, riffs that favour mood and melody over aggression, and a darkness that feels more like a spoken curse than a storm.
