History

Valery Yakovlevich Leontiev (born March 19, 1949, in the village of Ust-Usa in the Komi Republic, then the USSR) is a Soviet and Russian estrada singer, songwriter, and actor whose fame peaked through the 1980s and into the 1990s. He grew up in Yuryevets on the Volga, worked odd jobs, then found his footing performing in Vorkuta's amateur theater scene, giving his first solo concert there in 1972. His breakthrough came in 1979 at the all-Union Yalta contest, where he won first prize singing composer David Tukhmanov's ballad "In Memory of a Guitarist," launching a long songwriting partnership with Tukhmanov and later with Raimonds Pauls and Lora Kvint. Known for glittering costumes and theatrical stage shows, Leontiev built a catalog of era-defining hits and recorded more than 30 albums, several selling in the millions; in 1991 the World Music Awards named him Best Selling Soviet Artist. At the 1981 Yerevan pop-rock festival, foreign press compared his stage energy to Mick Jagger's. He also starred in the 1988 rock opera "Giordano," playing three roles, and was named People's Artist of Russia in 1996.
