History
A clear lyric soprano with unusually plain diction, Valentina Tolkunova (1946-2010) built a repertoire around home, children and everyday tenderness, a register almost no one else on Soviet estrada held so consistently. She started in Yuri Saulsky's VIO-66 ensemble and became widely known in the early 1970s through the television series «День за днём», whose songs were written by Ilya Kataev. What followed is domestic by design: «Поговори со мною, мама» (1974), «Носики-курносики» (1977), «Я не могу иначе» (1979). She sang them without vocal effects and without building to a climax, at a steady mezzo-forte, with the orchestra holding a soft cushion under the line. Where Lyudmila Zykina occupied the monumental, folk-adjacent end of that stage, Tolkunova took the warm and close one. She went on performing into the 2000s with the same material and the same delivery, and stayed a fixture of Soviet-era television reruns.
