History
Urban Dance Squad formed in Utrecht, Netherlands, out of what began as a one-off jam session at the club De Vrije Vloer on December 20, 1986. The band took its name from Parliament-Funkadelic's "Urban Dancefloor Guerillas" and became one of the first Dutch groups to fuse rock with rap, blending funk, ska, hip-hop, and soul years before rap-metal acts like Korn broke through. The classic lineup paired singer Rudeboy Remington (Patrick Tilon), guitarist Tres Manos (Rene van Barneveld), bassist Silly Sil (Silvano Matadin), drummer Magic Stick (Michel Schoots), and DJ DNA (Arjen de Vreede) on turntables. Their 1989 debut, "Mental Floss for the Globe," recorded in Brussels with TC Matic's Jean-Marie Aerts, won a Dutch Edison Award and produced the single "Deeper Shade of Soul," which reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The band toured America opening for Living Colour and later U2, though DJ DNA quit abruptly mid-tour. Urban Dance Squad released five studio albums before disbanding in 2000, reuniting briefly for shows in 2006.
