History

Unleashed took Swedish death metal away from gore and horror and pointed it at the Viking age. Founded in Stockholm in 1989 by bassist and vocalist Johnny Hedlund, the band built its lyrics around Norse mythology, pre-Christian Scandinavia and warrior themes, which set it apart from peers singing about corpses. Musically they were more direct than most of the big four: mid-tempo, marching riffs, clear song structures and Hedlund's hoarse bark, which stays closer to shouted words than to a deep growl, so the lyrics come through. The debut "Where No Life Dwells" and the follow-ups "Shadows in the Deep", which included a cover of Venom's "Countess Bathory", and "Across the Open Sea" established the formula early, and the band has kept releasing records for decades on labels including Century Media and Nuclear Blast. Unleashed is counted among the big four of Swedish death metal with Dismember, Entombed and Grave. What marks them out are the battle-hymn riffs, the chant-like choruses and a rough but intelligible vocal delivery.
