History
Unique 3 came out of Bradford at the turn of the 1990s and are usually named among the acts that started bleep techno. Their single The Theme, released in 1989, is often cited as one of the first records in the style: a bare drum machine pattern, sharp electronic tones and a sub bass pitched so low that it was felt as much as heard. That weight came from West Yorkshire sound system culture, where reggae and dub had taught a generation of producers to build music around the bass. Unique 3 carried that instinct into house and techno and helped give the northern English scene its own identity, distinct from the Chicago and Detroit records it grew out of. Follow-ups such as Musical Melody and Weight for the Bass, the latter a title that works almost as a manifesto, and the album Jus' Unique kept the focus on space, bleeps and pressure rather than melody. The trademarks are the cavernous low end, the minimal arrangement and the rough, homemade directness typical of early British rave.
